New York City Veterinary Emergency Response Team (NYC VERT)
New York City Veterinary Emergency Response Team (NYC VERT) is a volunteer group of veterinarians and animal health professionals dedicated to the support of New York City’s working and companion animals in times of disaster. When called upon by local government (New York City Office of Emergency Management), authorized non-profit and private agencies, NYC VERT will mobilize to assist in the following areas:
- Triage, emergency medical treatment, and on site support of working animals at designated emergency response locations.
- Medical assessment, and temporary relocation, care, and provision of shelter for companion animals during designated city crises.
- Cooperation before, during and in the aftermath of emergencies in planning, preparedness and mitigation activities to ensure dissemination of accurate crisis response information.
NYC VERT meets with OEM’s Animal planning Task Force monthly to insure that NYC will be adequately prepared for any disaster, be it natural or man made. “Ready New York for People” and for “Pets“ are some of the many brochures that are available to Veterinarians and the general public and also being mailed to all pet related facilities throughout the city. They can be obtained by anyone free of charge through online nyc.gov/readynewyork, or phone by calling 311.
Veterinary hospitals throughout the city have been called in the past to keep their emergency numbers on file to assist in evacuation, treatment, etc, in the event of a disaster and VERT being mobilized. If your practice is interested or still interested in being on this list, or as a veterinarian interested in being more actively involved with VERT, please contact us at NY*****@AO*.COM, www.NYCVERT.com, or 516-NYC-VERT (516-791-4175).
The not-for-profit organization was founded in 1998, and is incorporated in NY State. It is the outgrowth of an idea originated by the Veterinary Medical Association of NYC (VMANYC) to provide emergency veterinary care for pets owned by very low income New York City residents. NY SAVE is designated as a 501c(3) charity by the IRS and all gifts made to it are tax deductible. Click here to Learn More
